Holographic Papers – they are magical!

Standard

This post comes with a warning: Holographic papers are completely addictive! Once you start using them in your paper craft projects you will begin thinking of an endless array of applications.

What is Holographic Paper?

Holographic paper has been coated with a metallic-like finish that reflects light, creating a range of colours depending on the angle it is held to the light. Once added to a card or scrapbook page, the colours will vary as the project is handled and as it is viewed in different light conditions.

How do you use Holographic Paper?

This paper is perfect for any cards or layouts that need a little pizzazz.

  • Use large pieces to back a card design or scrapbook border
  • Mount special photos
  • Add narrow strips in place of shimmer trim, ribbon or twine
  • Cut it with Thin Cuts
  • Emboss it with textured folders
  • Stamp on it
  • Heat emboss on it
  • Add Stickles to it
  • Colour with alcohol markers

Stamping on Holographic Paper

Today I’m sharing some tips to stamp on Holographic paper.  The mermaid’s tails were made this way. Aren’t they adorable?  They will find a home on a layout I’m creating featuring photos of mermaids on stand up paddle boards – of course mermaids can’t stand so they were passengers on the boards.

The shiny surface of this paper will not accept dye-based inks.  They will just sit on the surface and smudge or wipe off.  The best ink for the job with Holographic papers is StazOn. This ink is specially formulated to work on any shiny surface.

Close To My Heart offer StazOn in Brown and Black.  Simply ink your stamp as you would normally and stamp on the paper gently.  Don’t add too much pressure to the block as it may slip and cause a blurred image.  I suggest stamping first, setting it aside to dry completely while you make the rest of the project.

StazOn Ink is ideal for stamping on any non-poraous surface like Holographic papers, glass, metal and plastic. Order yours at www.shaunnarichards.closetomyheart.com.au

It’s important to note that you require StazOn cleaning fluid to remove excess ink from your stamps.  Simply follow the instructions on the bottle.  Use an old cleaning cloth to wipe off the excess cleaner as it can leach colour from your stamp shammy.

SatzOn Cleaner is perfect for cleaning your stamps after using StazOn ink. Order yours at www.shaunnarichards.closetomyheart.com.au

What do you do when ALL the prints in a paper pack are fabulous? Show them off of course!  I’ve been hanging out to play with the NEW Stitched Bracket Thin Cuts.  One 3” x 12” strip of each paper is enough to cut 2 of each Bracket shape, giving you many options for how you arrange them.

I knew I wanted to create a border to display the paper shapes and that I had lots of photos to include on this layout, so I’d need a Pocket Plus Protector.  The last 6 patterns In Make It From Your Heart, Vol 3 are designed to accommodate these pocket protectors.  Pattern 33 was ideal for my layout.

Mix new with old for stash busting

I’m running a Mission Possible Challenge the first 6 weeks of the year and our focus is on using up embellishments in our stash.  I had a look through my ribbons and trims and found 4 that co-ordinated with the colours of the Urban papers.  Grouping several ribbons alongside each other creates a wider focal point in the design.

Have you ever been frustrated that twine stored on a card has kinks in it? Just run you damp stamp shammy along the twine and it will straighten out.

A title and journalling always complete the layout

It’s interesting how a title and a story transform the look of a layout, inviting the reader in to learn more about the photos.  My title used the Block Alphabet thin cuts, stamped with a background stamp and with some very long-retired alphabet stickers.

The journal boxes in the pockets were decorated with left over bracket shapes from the border teamed with a ribbon.  Simple and fast to make.

The Spruced Up Collection is versatile

Don’t be fooled by the wintery, woodsy feel to this kit.  It is brilliant for lots of everyday photos down under too.  The earthy colours team well with many landscapes and add a subtle backdrop for images featuring brighter colours.  I’m sure you will be impressed with the variety of ideas shared on this hop.

Make use of your scrapbooking scraps

I have enjoyed using this collection so much that I only had very small scraps leftover when it came time to make my sample for today’s blog.  I had just watched a sewing video about creating new fabric from lots of skinny strips and decided to try it with my paper and sticker scraps.  My first instinct was to reach for Basic Shapes Thin Cuts BUT my order arrived as I was experimenting and this gorgeous set, Mandela Vibes, was in the box!

I love the scallop shapes of the two large dies and cut several to use as bases.  Then it’s simply a matter of laying narrow strips (¼”up to ¾”) over the shape.  Begin near the centre, adding glue to the base and work out.  Liquid glue ensures all strips are stuck right to the edges of the base shape.  Then, flip the shape over and fussy cut the overhanging paper away.  Your die cut machine may be able to cut through both layers if you make a piece of striped ‘paper’ first – I just didn’t think about that at the time.

Create a free flowing border for your page

The shapes made were quite ‘heavy’ on the page.  To lighten the look of the design, I stamped the co-ordinating Mandela Vibes stamp directly to the base page using Sangria Ink. The base paper comes from the Jan/Feb Mix In paper packet.  As the name suggests, these packs are designed to blend well with the other collections featured in the catalogue, making it easier to use up your leftovers.

Finish off this border cluster by adding the small flower shapes from the Mandela Vibes set with Gold Glitter Gems for centres. The Julep flowers are mounted with Foam Dots

Create a scrapbook title in two parts

It is fun to mix sentiment stamps with alphabets to create interesting titles.  This page is the title page for my 2020 album.  There are exciting times ahead for us this year and I wanted to express that in the title.  First up, the date was created using a shadow stamping technique.  Stamp first in Mink Ink and then in Espresso ink, moving slightly to the left and up so the Mink looks likes a shadow.  Love is in the air this year so … was replaced by 3 little hearts from January’s stamp of the month, Everyday Magic.

The second part of the title appears in the bottom right of the page.  This creates visual balance with the Espresso cardstock border I added to the top and left of base paper.  The sentiment, “be excited for all good things to come” is ideal for a new year.  The corner design and hearts around this sentiment come from Everyday Magic and Mandela Vibes.

Make your photo mat stand out

This group photo shows the first of many celebrations we will enjoy this year.  It was wide and narrow so I need to jazz up the photo mat to help it stand out on the page.  A double mat of printed paper helped and printing the photo with a white border makes it stand out but it still looked too narrow.  Another look at the Mandela Vibes stamp set, gave me my solution – the beautiful scalloped edge stamp adds depth to the photo mount and completes the page.
