Love is in the air

Mike and I had the great joy of hosting an engagement party for our daughter and her fiancé recently.  Many of their close friends, family members and some of Kathryn’s scrapbook aunties joined us.  I had a lot of fun creating this frame for photo opportunities.

It’s not difficult to make a decorative frame but it does take some time.  Start early so you can enjoy the process and play around with placement of elements before you commit to gluing them down. The proposal happened at the beach so seashell stamps were an obvious choice and a couple of nice big Cricut cut diamonds were essential.  Twine and some leftover packaging added texture.

Find a sturdy frame

This one came from an Op Shop.  It had a very dated picture in it and was only a few dollars.  It was easy to pop the picture out and use pliers to bend the metal thingies that held it in so no fingers would be harmed during the photographs.

Begin making LOTS of small elements

You will be amazed how many small pieces you will use to achieve a balanced look to your frame. The seashells on this one come from two stamp sets.  The smaller shells are from a retired set called Swirly Shells and the largest shells are a stamp and thin cut set called Beach Treasures, available for 30% off as part of this month’s Stamptacular sale.  Stamp the shells onto the light side of almond cardstock and heat emboss using Copper Tinsel, Gold Tinsel or Clear powder.

Then pull up some images of real shells on your phone or laptop and use them as a guide to add colour and patterns to the largest shells using watercolour paints.  I was fortunate to have an artist visiting who took over this part for me 😊

Create focal elements

The large and medium size diamonds were cut from white glitter paper using Close To My Heart’s Artistry Cricut Cartridge.  The largest seashells were a free download from Cricut and were cut in julep glitter paper.  Cut two layers for the base of each Cricut shape to strengthen them.  In this frame, the gorgeous Holographic paper shows through the pattern of the shell overlays and a solid cardstock forms the bottom layer. See how the play of light changes the colour of the holographic papers?

‘Love’ was cut 4 times from cardstock and layered to make it really robust.  It isn’t attached to anything firm so needs to be able to stand up to some handling.

Layer all your elements

This part does take some time.  You will find you move pieces around quite a bit until your design is balanced and pleasing to your eye.  Work in opposite corners with the lower cluster taking more space than the top one.

You need an anchor to build your design on.  I had some brown paper packaging that came wrapped around bottles.  I’ve had it in the craft cupboard for 2 years not knowing how I would use it.  This was the perfect project for it!  Attach your largest elements to this base.  I used liquid glass because it gives a strong bond and filled the gaps in the brown paper.

Create a personalised photo prop frame using stamps and Cricut cuts from the Close To My Heart range. Visit https://shaunnarichards.closetomyheart.com.au/ to see the range of themed stamps and cartridges available to purchase

The trickiest part was attaching this base cluster to the frame.  My final solution was to cut 1” strips of cardstock.  Liquid glass one end to the back of the brown paper, coat the strip with more liquid glass and wrap it around the frame.  You are working from the back so it doesn’t have to be neat.  Once all the decorative elements are in place you can come back and cover the ‘workings’ with a sheet of cardstock cut to fit.

The final stages are attaching the smaller elements and adding some texture to the clusters.  A mixture of glue dots and liquid glass holds everything in place.  Shells are overlapped and tucked behind other elements.  The twine is caught in a couple of places so it can loop and provide dimensionality.  Some chunky bling added contrasting colour.

Choose your theme and start creating

What theme could you use for a photo prop frame?  Have a look through your supplies and re-discover hidden treasures in your craft cupboard.

A list of supplies used in this project appears below.  Order yours on my website.  All Stamp Sets and Stamp/Thin Cut bundles are discounted by up to 50% during February 2020.  Look for the Stampaganza link.

Holographic Papers – they are magical!

Standard

This post comes with a warning: Holographic papers are completely addictive! Once you start using them in your paper craft projects you will begin thinking of an endless array of applications.

What is Holographic Paper?

Holographic paper has been coated with a metallic-like finish that reflects light, creating a range of colours depending on the angle it is held to the light. Once added to a card or scrapbook page, the colours will vary as the project is handled and as it is viewed in different light conditions.

How do you use Holographic Paper?

This paper is perfect for any cards or layouts that need a little pizzazz.

  • Use large pieces to back a card design or scrapbook border
  • Mount special photos
  • Add narrow strips in place of shimmer trim, ribbon or twine
  • Cut it with Thin Cuts
  • Emboss it with textured folders
  • Stamp on it
  • Heat emboss on it
  • Add Stickles to it
  • Colour with alcohol markers

Stamping on Holographic Paper

Today I’m sharing some tips to stamp on Holographic paper.  The mermaid’s tails were made this way. Aren’t they adorable?  They will find a home on a layout I’m creating featuring photos of mermaids on stand up paddle boards – of course mermaids can’t stand so they were passengers on the boards.

The shiny surface of this paper will not accept dye-based inks.  They will just sit on the surface and smudge or wipe off.  The best ink for the job with Holographic papers is StazOn. This ink is specially formulated to work on any shiny surface.

Close To My Heart offer StazOn in Brown and Black.  Simply ink your stamp as you would normally and stamp on the paper gently.  Don’t add too much pressure to the block as it may slip and cause a blurred image.  I suggest stamping first, setting it aside to dry completely while you make the rest of the project.

StazOn Ink is ideal for stamping on any non-poraous surface like Holographic papers, glass, metal and plastic. Order yours at www.shaunnarichards.closetomyheart.com.au

It’s important to note that you require StazOn cleaning fluid to remove excess ink from your stamps.  Simply follow the instructions on the bottle.  Use an old cleaning cloth to wipe off the excess cleaner as it can leach colour from your stamp shammy.

SatzOn Cleaner is perfect for cleaning your stamps after using StazOn ink. Order yours at www.shaunnarichards.closetomyheart.com.au

Choose from two colours

Beautiful Sentiments

Don’t you just love the mixture of fonts and the fun way these sentiments are arranged?  They will look awesome on the inside or the outside of your cards.  As always, I challenged myself to use this cardmakers stamp set on a scrapbook layout. The friendship stamp jumped out immediately and got things rolling.

Looking through my scraps I found this white heart I had cut for a previous project.  As often happens, I changed my mind and stored it away.  Today it is perfect for my design.

To create the background stamping, begin with the open circle from Colourful Textures (D1784) using Wisteria Ink (it’s NEW).  Don’t stress about making a perfect pattern, just fill the background shape.  The sweet flower inside the circles, stamped with Saffron ink, and the little heart between them, stamped with Wisteria ink, both come from the Stamp of the month. The dots outlining the heart are made by repeatedly stamping the … in Glacier Ink.

Once you are finished stamping, use a sponge and Lilac ink to colour all over the heart.  Make the shading darker toward the bottom.  Sponging the journal box in the same manner ties the left and right pages together.

This layout will include photos of a very dear friend I am catching up with soon (that’s why the photo wells are empty!)  I knew the friendship quote needed to feature on the layout … then it became the title.  The Mix In paper pack in our newest catalogue is just lovely.  All the printed papers on this layout are part of the pack.

Add a couple of vellum butterflies from the Every Little Things Vellum Di-cuts. Colour them with TriBlend Markers to co-ordinate with your papers.

The little black dots were created using Stickles Glitter Gel.  Add these last, just before leaving the craft room, so they can dry without you accidentally smudging them.

Several variations are possible from the same cut pieces.  Add in some scraps of co-ordinating cardstock and the cards are immediately transformed.  Each of these cards is different.  Half of them girly, half suited to guys too.  That’s the best thing about card kits – you can start with the basic design and then personalise it to your needs or make multiples of the same design.  The choice is yours.

Add some fun to your envelopes too! Cut 1/2″ strips from left over paper and stamp one of the images. The recipient will be excited before they even open your card!

Fun Fonts

Don’t you just love the fonts and the fun way these sentiments are arranged?  They will look awesome on the inside or the outside of your cards.  I always like to make every Stamp of the Month work on a scrapbook layout and this set was way easier than I had anticipated.

Use From Me to You on a scrapbook Layout

This layout was part of an album kit I received as a reward for qualifying for the most recent CTMH Incentive trip to Buenos Aries.  I love the vibrant colours and decided it would actually be perfect for some photos from the previous incentive trip I earned to Tahiti in 2018.

The original design only had a couple of canary yellow circles.  Adding a few more highlighted some favourite photos of this snorkelling experience.  All these sentiments are from this Stamp of the Month and are ideal to use in photo albums.

The designer squiggles at the top and bottom of the journal box plus the repeated stamping on the edge of the Mint cardstock on the RH page are made from stamps in this set too – such versatility!

As usual, there were way more photos than the layout could take.  Thank heavens for Pocket Plus protectors – 7 extra snaps of gorgeous reef fish displayed in a jiffy.  The one spare slot was filled with a self made PML card.  Simply cut a 3” x 4” piece of cardstock.  Background stamp and then add the stitched circle thin cut with sentiment.  Stamps on this element came from one of Close To My Heart’s Hostess Rewards stamps, Say Cheese.  Ask your consultant how you can get this set for free.

First up, let’s look at how you can integrate the journaling into an existing layout design.  This layout began with one of the 8” x 6” pages shown in the I Heart Us Deluxe Workshops Your Way kit.  Adding the page and photos to a 12 x 12 base is easy.

The small squares were originally meant for photos but adding stamped journal lines inside the squares, turn them into an interesting place to tell your story.

The gorgeous little starburst stamp buddies nicely with the sequins to complete the title and embellishment clusters on the layout.  Adding the date to a layout is super helpful when you are ready to file it into an album.

The following photos show 5 ways you can use this stamp set to make your own PML journaling cards – either 6” x 4” or 3” x 4”.  The papers used are from So Much Happy, which is March’s featured collection with Close To My Heart.

Making your own journal boxes is a great way to use up small off cuts once you have made the layouts from a scrapbooking kit.

This big bold stamp is perfect for scrapbookers like me. There are so many things that make my heart happy which I record in my albums.

Every summer a number of outdoor cinemas open in and around Perth, Western Australia.  The evenings here are balmy, perfect for a picnic dinner and a movie.  Our favourite movies are the ones shown as part of the International Film Festival.  Most are a little quirky, frequently in another language and always give insight into the way others live.  Each year we try to introduce new people to the pleasures of this pastime.

I drew inspiration for this layout from Pattern 5 of Make It From Your Heart Vol 2.  The papers come from the gorgeous Heart Happy collection which is only available until the end of this month.

When stamping with large stamps (this one is about 6” x 4”) I prefer to dab ink onto the block then apply stamp as usual but flip the paper and block over to rub with my hand.  This helps ensure all the ink is applied to the paper.

Once stamped in Sapphire ink, I added colour using the Mint and Red Shimmer brushes.  The fine point of the brush is great for detailed stroke work.

I was thrilled to discover the Curlicue alphabet stamp set in my stash – it compliments the font used in the Heartfelt Sentiments title and perfectly fits the banner from the Heartfelt Sentiments.  Stamp one letter at a time so you can follow the curve of the banner. Begin with the middle letter and work out. The Curlicue set was part of a Cricut collection.

The Something Fierce collection is available until the end of April 2019.  Buy it as a full kit or purchase individual items.

You will find the bright colours in this pack very addictive – I’m on my 3rd pack of papers!!  Today’s layout is the third in a series on our visit to Camden Markets in London.  As the photos were black and white I had free range for my choice of papers to use.

The Love of Colour Book is an invaluable resource we all need to own.  It shows colour combinations that work together!  I flipped to the Bluebird page as that is one of the colours featured in Something Fierce. The 4 colour combo suited this pack well.  Whilst it isn’t exactly the same shade of yellow and pink in the pack, the combo works well.

Having pulled out papers, stickers and cut apart images in this colour combination, I was ready to create. The suggested layout in Love of Colour worked brilliantly for these photos.  The bright colours really help my black and white images stand out.  The charcoal accents tie it all together.

This cluster is a combination of images from the cut-apart sheet, sticker sheet, fussy cut scallops from the paper and a PML card I cut up.  The rest of the PML card provided the boxes for the journaling on the pages.

I felt the layout needed something more and so I reached for my Alphabet stamps.  The title is made using Simply Said and Brushed Letters – my two favourite sets in the current catalogue.  Looking at the punctuation stamps in Brushed Letters, I decided to add the single dot either side of ‘Camden’ and the 3 dots as borders above and below my papers – not exactly even spacing but it’s OK.  Done is better than perfect, right?

By the way, Alphabet Stamps are 35% off this month!

S1901 Card Captions – CTMH Stamp of the Month Australasian Blog Hop

Standard

Welcome to the our first Stamp of the Month Australasian Blog Hop for 2019.  This is a circular hop.  If you arrived from Doreen’s Blog, you are in the right place. Simply read through this post and click on the link to the next blog at the end of it.  Keep reading and ‘hopping’ until you find yourself back where you started from.  Each blog will showcase a project featuring the Card Captions (S1901) stamp set which is January’s Stamp of the Month.

S1901 Card Captions is January 2019's Stamp of the Month from Close To My Heart. Order yours from www.shaunnarichards.ctmh.com.au.

At first glance this stamp set appears to be only for cards but as a diehard scrapper I could see potential for use on celebration pages too.

Today’s page features photos of a birthday celebration.  I took inspiration from the placement of sentiments on the carrier sheet and arranged all the birthday-ish stamps along one edge of the 5” x 6” block.  The little line drawn images fill any spaces beautifully.  I stamped in Pebble ink as I didn’t want the words to dominate on the page.  Once completed I felt these sections needed a little ‘pop’ so I stamped ‘Happy’ onto scraps of the yellow stripe paper, fussy cut and glued over the original stamping.

This layout design was featured on Close To My Heart’s Make It From Your Heart blog during December.  I loved the simplicity of it and printed the pattern.  The newly released Mix-in papers suited my photos beautifully.  Once completed I played with two new stamp sets for the decorative elements.

The balloons and streamer clusters come from the Something Fierce Cardmaking set.  My tip for stamping the string is to stamp on the background first, then stamp the bow on the balloon and layer over the image on the background.  Pop the front balloon up on foam dots.

The cupcakes are from Years of Sweetness.  I love the effect of shading the icing with two different stamps and ink colours.  There is a matching Cricut cut for this cupcake but I fussy cut it quite easily.

Card Captions  (S1901) is only available during January, 2019.  Full retail price is $29.50 AUD but you can have this gorgeous set for just $8.25 AUD when accompanied by an $82.50 AUD order. Place your order with your Close To My Heart Consultant.

S1811 Seasonal Trees CTMH Stamp of the Month Blog Hop

Welcome to November’s Stamp of the Month Australasian Blog Hop. This is a circular hop. If you arrived from Wendy’s Blog you are in the right place. Simply read through this post and click on the link to the next blog at the end of it. Keep reading and ‘hopping’ until you find yourself back where you started from. Each blog will showcase a project featuring the Seasonal Trees (S1811) stamp set which is November’s Stamp of the Month.

S1811 Seasonal Trees is available for purchase in November 2018 from www.shaunnarichards.closetomyheart.com.au

I adore the trees in this set but felt you would be seeing a lot of them as complete trees on this hop so decided to think outside the box.  I’ve added components of the trees to the card designs from the You Got This Workshop Your Way Card Kit (G1166).  I’ve also included sentiments from two other Workshop Your Way Card Kits – Epic Birthday (G1165) and Hugs for You (G1164)

The first four cards use Pattern 1 from You Got This Workshop Your Way Card Kit.  The last  two cards use Pattern 2.  I enjoyed decorating the envelop flaps to co-ordinate with the cards.

First up… First and second generation background stamping of leaves in Fern ink.

Card 2… Fern leaves stamped in Saffron ink

Create this card using G1166 You Got This WYW, G1165 Epic Birthday and S1811 Seasonal Trees. Available for purchase at www.shaunnarichards.closetomyheart.com.au

Card 3… I love this sentiment from the Hugs For You WYW kit and that little bird sitting on the letter makes me happy.  He’s from the stamp of the month.

Create this card using G1166 You Got This WYW, G1164 Hugs For You and S1811 Seasonal Trees. Available for purchase at www.shaunnarichards.closetomyheart.com.au

Card 4 is the same pattern as 1,2 & 3 but has been rotated…  The leaves are half the pine tree foliage stamp.  Just had to include the little bird again.  The saffron edge on the white panel and envelope flap is also from the stamp of the month.

Create this card using G1166 You Got This WYW, G1165 Epic Birthday and S1811 Seasonal Trees. Available for purchase at www.shaunnarichards.closetomyheart.com.au

Card 5… I had to find a way to fit the sentiment from (Hugs For You) and the tree so I overlapped them.  Still loving that bird!  So did my daughter’s cat – she jumped onto the crafting table and added a wee smudge of pomegranate ink to the card!!!  I ran out of time to re-do the panel but I suggest you make yours without the smudge (hehehe)

Card 6… This is my final sample.  The background on the white panel was made by inking just the stem of the palm tree.  The sentiment was masked, cut, layered and popped on foam tape.

Seasonal Trees (S1811) is only available during November, 2018. Full retail price is $29.50 but you can have this gorgeous set for just $8.25 when accompanied by a $75 order. Place your order with your Close To My Heart Consultant.

Isn’t it nice to create lots of different cards from the same 2 patterns? I hope this blog post has inspired you to use the stamps in different ways as you are crafting.  Did you have a favourite card?
