One design four ways

My list of people to thank is long at the moment so I wanted a quick way to make several cards.  I did want to individualise them a little too so I didn’t get bored!

Each of the four cards featured in this post is based on Pattern 2 in Make It From Your Heart Vol 4.  This how to book has sketches and cutting measurements for 24 different cards.  There are also two samples of completed cards shown for each pattern.  It is my absolute go to for cards in a hurry.

Use both sides of paper

When cutting pieces remember that printed papers have different patterns on each side and Close To My Heart cardstock is two toned – light on one side, dark on the other.

This makes it easy to have your cards look different even thought the basic design is the same.

Change the shape of the sentiment box

Another super easy way to change the look of this card is to use different shapes for the sentiment box.  The first card uses a simple rectangle and the other three use different bracket thin cuts.

Choose a single shape or layer a smaller shape on a larger one.

So many Thank You’s to choose from

This stamp set has many different fonts and sizes of words on it along with those gorgeous shapes.  This means you can always find a stamp to fit your chosen sentiment box.  This is a must have set in your collection for this reason alone.

Add a bow just for fun

How cute is that dimensional bow?  This is the small bow thin cuts.  There is also a big one.  They are so very easy to make using the dies, a bone folder and glue dots.  Add the complete bow, just the tails or just the top segment to get different effects on your cards.

Decorate your envelopes

It’s always fun to add some stamping to your envelopes.  Decorate the back flap if it is going in the post so your stamping doesn’t mess with the sorting machine scanners.  If it’s a hand delivered card, use one of the shape stamps where a postage stamp would go.

Order your Stamp of the Month

Every Thank You (S2101) is only available during January, 2021.  Full retail price is $34 but VIP’s can have this gorgeous set FREE when accompanied by an $80 order. If you are not a VIP, you will pay $9 with a qualifying order.  But seriously…check out Close To My Heart’s VIP program first!  Place your order with your Close To My Heart Consultant.

Sweet blooms growing on a trellis

The flower clusters in this set made me think blooms growing on a trellis in the garden.  What luck!  The NEW Geometric Grids Thin Cuts LOOK like a trellis.  It’s a match made in heaven.

A flick through Make It From Your Heart Vol 3 helped plan what the layout would look like. Pattern 5 was my starting point.  The width of vertical elements needed minor adjustments to fit the dimensions of the thin cut.

You will want 5 of the thin cuts. Trim one one edge on two of them and overlap to make the RH page panel. Cut the other two in half length ways to make the narrower trellis on the LH page

Heat emboss, colour and fussy cut stamped images

Silver heat embossing powder adds a little shine to the floral elements.  The fussy cutting did take a little time but it’s easy to do using micro-tip scissors and gives the illusion of real flowers on the trellis.

Create pages and cards with Happiness Never Grows Old (S2012) – December 2020's Stamp of the Month from Close To My Heart. Order yours from https://shaunnarichards.closetomyheart.com.au/ during December 2020 only

Colouring was super quick with shimmer brushes.  Just add a flick of colour to each segment on the flowers and leaves.  No need to worry about going over the lines because the heat embossing won’t run.

Can’t find a zip strip to suit?

Make your own!  Use one of the leaf stamps in the set to fill a 1” strip of cardstock.  Tone on tone ink works great.  Then cut the strip in half longways and you are good to go!

Layered thin cuts make your title pop

Cut 3 or 4 sets of letters for the title word and glue the layers together.  This adds dimension and helps your title to stand out.  Combine the feature word with stamped sentiments and a few stickers to create a focal point on the layout.

So many creative options

  • Will you have your pie with or without cream?
  • Marshmallows floating on your hot chocolate or will it be mulled wine?
  • Traditional red or a rainbow of candy cane colours?
  • Cups stamped tone on tone or in contrasting colours?
  • Christmas, catch up with the girls or baking theme?

Traditional Christmas scrapbook layout

I’ve gone with traditional colours, hot chocolate and red candy canes.  I use the Love of Colour Vol 2 to find the shades of red and greens that work best together.  This 4 colour combo of Scarlet, Evergreen, Fern and Mink are easy on the eye when backed by linen base pages.

I will add a title once I know which of this year’s Christmas photos will go on this page.

Stitched Square Thin cuts make designing easy

It was super quick to make the blocked layout.  Two colours cut at once through my CTMH die-cutting machine with the two smallest squares in the set.  I love that these dies give you a frame and a solid square from one cut.

Then it was a simple matter of mix and matching the 4 colours and making sure the squares were straight on the page.

Step your photos

Whilst the colour blocks are squares there is no reason some of your photos can’t be rectangles.  You may need to creatively crop the photo that spans two pages, just keep the focal image on the LH page.

Welcome to the CTMH Australasian Comfort & Joy Blog Hop.  This hop features the artwork of some talented women from across Australia and New Zealand.

If you arrived from Doris’ Blog, Creative Inspirations, you are in the right place.  If this is your first time on a blog hop, simply read on and enjoy my creations.  Click on the link at the end of this post and it will take you to the next blog and so on and so on. Easy and fun! Best part- you can see several different projects you can create with Close To My Heart’s Comfort & Joy collection!   When you land back here, you are done and it’s time to hit the scrapbook room for some crafting fun.

Connect through Christmas Cards

This year, more than in recent times, we need to reach out to those we love.  Share kindness and let people know they are in our thoughts.  A handmade card posted for Christmas is a perfect way to do this.

Close To My Heart’s Comfort & Joy collection is available for purchase until the end of October 2020. View the range at www.shaunnarichards.closetomyheart.com.au

I encourage you to get started early so your international cards are in the post in plenty of time to compensate for delays in delivery due to flight shortages.  A postcard I sent from Western Australia to the USA recently took 7 weeks to arrive!

Next up, set a Nov 30 deadline to have your cards for interstate Australian friends completed.  Cards between Perth and Melbourne are currently taking 14 days to arrive.  I’m sure this will blow out the closer we get to Christmas.

Close To My Heart’s Comfort & Joy collection is available for purchase until the end of October 2020. View the range at www.shaunnarichards.closetomyheart.com.au

Sending cards early also means your friends and family get to have them on display for longer – a regular reminder that you are thinking of them.

Comfort & Joy Papers

The Comfort & Joy papers feature traditional Christmas colours mixed with some black.  There are subtle and bold patterns making them perfect for card making.

Use Make It From Your Heart Volume 4

This volume of How to Patterns is filled with card designs.  All the measurements are included and 2 examples of completed cards are shown for each pattern.  All 6 of today’s cards are made from these patterns, using the photos as inspiration.

Use stamps in different ways

Three stamp sets are combined to make these six cards.  Once I had one of each design made, it was easy to duplicate them to use up my full pack of paper, cardstock and glitter paper

Order your supplies

The Comfort & Joy collection is available, while stocks last, until the end of October, 2020.   You can order papers, co-ordinating cardstock, PML Cards and 2 stamp/thin cut sets individually.  There is also a card workshop kit and a scrapbooking workshop kit for those who enjoy more decorative layouts. Check your consultant’s website.  If you’re an Aussie without a consultant, come shop with me by clicking here.

Stamp on a Heart Shaker Window

It’s easy to get a clear stamped image on the shaker window acetate using StazOn ink.  This ink is specially designed for use on non-porous surfaces.  Be sure to clean the stamp with StazOn cleaner for best results.

Where is your happiest place?  This collection is filled with papers and decorative cardstock to help you highlight your happy places.  The colours are bright and cheery and the patterns adapt to so many different places and photo themes.

My current happy places include picnics in National Parks, our home, friend’s homes and the WA Ballet centre.  All these places have made me happy over the past few weeks. My FAVOURITE place is anywhere my family is – currently that’s on video calls!

Make It From Your Heart

Once again, I reached for my copy of Make It From Your Heart, Vol 3 for a layout pattern.  This time I used Pattern 2.  I replaced the solid block (Pieces B & E) with ¾” x 6” strips of the embossed stars cardstock. You need 7 strips each in 3 colours.  One strip is cut in half long ways (Glacier in my example)

Summer Vibes – Sunshiny colours to brighten your day

The more I create with this collection, the more I appreciate the colour choices in it.  There is a nice mix of bold prints and colours with more subtle designs.  It will showcase any of your summertime photos perfectly but is also great for travel, family and sports themes.

Close To My Heart’s Summer Vibes collection is available for purchase until the end of August 2020. View the range at www.shaunnarichards.closetomyheart.com.au

Everything old is new again

Do you have scrapbook layouts you return to again and again?  Each time you use the design it just works and makes you happy?  Colour blocking is one of those designs for me.  It’s a great way to use the last pieces from a kit too.

I don’t begin with a pattern, just my photos. Actually, in this case, it’s  photo place holders because the delivery of my prints is delayed 😊

Decide on the size of your canvas – this one is 11” squares.  Place your largest photos first and then add the smaller prints until you have a layout that is balanced and pleasing to your eye.  Choose a spot for your journaling and then fill any blank spaces with rectangular pieces of printed paper.  Aim to have an even space between each element.  ¼” is a good standard size gap.

Add embellishments last

Once all the photos and papers are arranged you can add your embellishments.  This layout features stamps from the Summer Vibes Scrapbooking set.

Close To My Heart’s Summer Vibes collection is available for purchase until the end of August 2020. View the range at www.shaunnarichards.closetomyheart.com.au

Stamp the waves and then cut a small section to slip your surfboards behind so it looks like they are standing upright in the sand. Add shimmer brush to the stamped images.

Sand the edges of cardstock elements before sticking in place. The white core showing through softens the look giving a beachy feel to the layout.

Cut the glasses from black cardstock using the thin cut. Stamp glasses onto scrap paper and cut the lenses out. Use these pieces as a pattern to cut lenses from holographic paper so they look reflective.

Blues Skies – Celebrating National Scrapbook Month

May is all about sharing and celebrating our love of scrapbooking.  This year, Close To My Heart has released a vibrant and upbeat collection which is sure to make your heart happy.  It’s called Blue Skies. There are papers, stickers, stamps and a Cut Above kit that all co-ordinated perfectly.  You can choose individual products or grab a bargain by selecting a product bundle.

Make a quick scrapbook layout using bold patterns

I have chosen to work with two of the most dramatic prints in the paper pack.   I’ve used the opposite side of both these quite a bit but struggled each time I tried to add the full rainbow and the tile pattern to my pages.

After some thought, I realised it was because I was trying to add too much of the paper and I felt it overwhelmed my photos.  For me, bold patterns need clean and simple designs and a little goes a long way!

Keep it simple, Scrapbooker

My top tips when working with bold prints

  1. Balance the bold print with plenty of neutral background.  This layout is built on White Daisy cardstock to help the patterns stand out but also to rest the eye as it views the entire layout
  2. Use small pieces of a bold print on your layout.  Cutting the paper into a hexagon shape creates interest but also breaks up the very strong design elements of a bold print.
  3. Remember the triangle rule to balance your design.  Adding 3 clusters across your layout helps frame it and draw the eye into the pages.

The details

The hexagons were cut with a thin cut that is part of the Aurora Scrapbooking set (X3711).  It has a variety of different shapes to choose from.  The co-ordinating stamps feature outdoor, woodsy kind of sentiments which didn’t suit this layout so I performed a little stamp surgery and cut out the centre part of the hexagon stamp, leaving just the border.  It’s amazing how that very simple, narrow outline enhances the design.

The title comes from the Blue Skies stamp set (CC5201).  The sun and clouds are from the Beautiful Day stamp and thin cuts set (CC5202). These sets have so many great elements on them– perfect for many different scrapbook themes.

This photo shows what the layout looked like in the planning stages – see the difference a few accents can make? Notice I changed the direction of the stripes a couple of times too.

Yesterday & Today – more than a heritage collection

This whole collection is in shades of brown and grey.  That can be a challenge for bright loving scrapbookers like me.  I have to confess, I wasn’t a fan when I first saw the preview images but I have now created many layouts I adore using this collection.

The neutral shades make the perfect backdrop for outdoor pursuits and photos of nature.  Today’s layout features the vibrant reds and greens of King Parrots.  If bright papers were also used on the layout it would be an assault on the senses.  Accenting with shades of brown allows the photos to shine.

Keep the page design simple

You really can’t go past a border made up of strips of varying widths.  It’s a simple way to ensure you have a lot of real estate on your pages for photos.  This layout holds 14 photos without a flip flap in sight!

Working on page bases of toffee cardstock helps blend the printed papers with the backgrounds of the photos, adding warmth and texture to it.

Highlight your layout with stamped & die cut images.

The new Blossoming Friendship stamp/ Thin Cut set is a dream come true for me.  I love our Australian bush landscape and having 2 different eucalypt leaves featured along with closed and open gum nuts offers me endless opportunities to accent photos we take in our own country.

Create simple clusters by stamping on coloured cardstock.  The gum nuts are coloured with Tri-Blend markers and the leaves with Julep Shimmer Brush.

Use what you’ve learned in the Story by Stacy Kits

This layout is a classic example of a Short Story.  It includes lots of images on one subject with a story that summarises the event and adds a reflection of the experience.  I really feel I am a far superior storyteller for having completed Close To My Heart’s Story by Stacy course.

Don’t be afraid to ask a friend for feedback on your design

Our Sandy is never far away when I’m sitting quietly scrapbooking.  As I was completing this layout he popped up to check things out.  I think it was a thumbs up as he lay there purring for some time.  Writing my story was a challenge ‘cos he didn’t move and I didn’t have the heart to disturb him!

Urban is back for a short time

You will love the very different prints in this paper pack – all representative of buildings and construction.  The colours are earthy and the prints textural.

The Urban collection is available until the end of January 2020.  Buy it as a full kit or purchase individual items.  Ask your Close To My Heart Consultant for details.

Show off ALL the patterns

What do you do when ALL the prints in a paper pack are fabulous? Show them off of course!  I’ve been hanging out to play with the NEW Stitched Bracket Thin Cuts.  One 3” x 12” strip of each paper is enough to cut 2 of each Bracket shape, giving you many options for how you arrange them.

Use Make It From Your Heart patterns

I knew I wanted to create a border to display the paper shapes and that I had lots of photos to include on this layout, so I’d need a Pocket Plus Protector.  The last 6 patterns In Make It From Your Heart, Vol 3 are designed to accommodate these pocket protectors.  Pattern 33 was ideal for my layout.

Mix new with old for stash busting

I’m running a Mission Possible Challenge the first 6 weeks of the year and our focus is on using up embellishments in our stash.  I had a look through my ribbons and trims and found 4 that co-ordinated with the colours of the Urban papers.  Grouping several ribbons alongside each other creates a wider focal point in the design.

Have you ever been frustrated that twine stored on a card has kinks in it? Just run you damp stamp shammy along the twine and it will straighten out.

A title and journalling always complete the layout

It’s interesting how a title and a story transform the look of a layout, inviting the reader in to learn more about the photos.  My title used the Block Alphabet thin cuts, stamped with a background stamp and with some very long-retired alphabet stickers.

The journal boxes in the pockets were decorated with left over bracket shapes from the border teamed with a ribbon.  Simple and fast to make.
